The concert ended and the crowd cleared, everyone heading to different locations on the boat to catch the other bands as their sets began soon after KISS finished. My new friend and I had parked ourselves on the upper deck near the bar with a few buckets of beers and an extremely over-sized cup I had ordered a cocktail in. We drank until we felt we were done and then we both said our goodbyes and headed to bed. I made my way to my room without too much of an issue, which was surprising considering how much I had to drink.
I entertained conversation with my cabin mate but im sure he could tell i was out of it. I jumped into bed and I was out like a light. The next day, our day at sea. I boarded the ship excited as ever and located our room. Our bags were checked so they had not arrived yet and the room was located on the lowest floor you can book, floor number 4.
Because of this it was also one of the first floors to have the rooms made up and ready for us to gain access to as there had been another cruise using the boat up until that morning.
The company that runs these festivals at sea Sixthman had given guests the opportunity to opt in to a pre-party on board the shit. Initially the plan was to have the ship leave port and sail out of Miami and back into port the following morning to pick up those who did not book the pre-party.
The advantages to this were that you would already have your room ready prior to the main cruise and that were was a long list of acts performing on a stage that was set up on the pool deck outside.
A large stage this year containing full production quality lighting had been erected over one of the pools they had covered the pool and drained it and it hosted bands for the pre-party as well as the other acts for the rest of the trip. The pool deck was the place to be. Booking the pre-party also meant that you did your mandatory safety briefing that day instead of the first day of the cruise.
This was important as while the boat is leaving port, KISS was doing a sail away show on the pool deck stage. The band I was looking forward to the most was Steel Panther. This band had been one of my favorite bands for years now and when they were announced as guests on The KISS Kruise, I was beyond excited.
I made my way to the first thing everyone usually checks out on board a cruise, the buffet. Now a lot of people complain about buffet food on cruises. I am not one of those people.
The caliber of most of the food they served was actually pretty high, so props to Norwegian Cruise Lines for that. I headed down to the pool deck again to see who else I could find.
Who did I find? Michael Starr the singer from Steel Panther!! My cruise was kicking off to a great start! After my much needed feast, I headed around the pool deck which was sectioned off at this time as they were still constructing the stage over the empty pool. I decided to stand and have a chat with a few people I knew.
After about an hour it hit me. I was tired, extremely tired. So I headed down to my room and took a nap…it would only be a nap, or so I told myself. Steel Panther were hitting the stage at 11pm!! So i quickly got up and rushed upstairs. There was already a small crowd but I was relieved that most were in the ship atrium where another band were playing.
I secured a second row position and waited eagerly. The Steel Panther show was amazing as always and I was told by a few people that they drew a larger than normal crowd for a pool deck show compared to previous years when other bands had played. I hung around the pool deck and chatted with some people again before I decided to check out the buffet….
It was conveniently located just inside the doors on the pool deck. As I walked in I noticed someone who looked familiar. It took me a second to realize that there right in front of me out of costume, was Satchel the guitarist from Steel Panther.
Whats better than this is that as he was out of costume sans wig and spandex no one was noticing it was him. This was surreal, so I approached kindly and introduced myself. So I thanked him for an amazing show and let him know that I appreciated their performance. He thanked me for my comments and then proceeded to have a conversation with me! Myself, him and Fran all having a chat with barely anyone even noticing who these guys were or interrupting.
I was ecstatic! I finally caved and asked for a picture and Satchel happily accepted. He also pointed out my tattoos and mentioned how great they looked. We then got into a conversation about how the rest of the band went to Bondi Ink in Sydney last time they were there to have work done.
Soon Later I noticed that Bass player Lexxi Foxx and Drummer Stixx Zadinya obviously not their real names had come up and were handing in the same area a few feet away. I thanked Satchel again and went over to say hi to Lexxi. Again I approached politely and thanked him for the show. He immediately engaged in conversation. We spoke for 20 minutes about various things including playing bass and he also pointed out my tattoos and complimented them!
I politely asked him for a picture and he was more than happy to pose for multiple, pulling his signature face that he does while onstage. By the time I headed over to Stixx he had a lady around his arm and wsa heading off. I was more than happy.
I felt like I could do a back-flip I was so excited! I reunited with some friends I had made and told them of my experience, they were thrilled that the band was being so interactive. We hung out and had some late night food and soon after I headed to bed. And with that, my first night on the boat was over.
Other bands were out most of the night warming us up for the KISS shows to come. For a first night on board, I was already feeling like my journey all the way from Australia was very much worth it. I refused to leave the airport at Los Angeles as passing through security was bad enough there and there was no way that I was going to do it twice just to leave the airport for a few hours to then go back through the process again.
I did see people eye him off and notice him, but no one was bothering him so I decided to let him be and not approach him. I booked early so I scored a huge discount for first class.
I was glad I did, after such a long day waiting and the travel on my long haul flight I was ready to crash. The huge seat and massive recline was just what I needed. At the pointy end of the plane even rough turbulence seems more like a bus swaying than sudden jolts that I am used to further back in the plane where I usually sit. The safety demonstration is done to a pre-recorded video that features all the safety information relayed via a rap.
It was so entertaining, and the attendants got right into it with their demonstration of the safety equipment as well. I arrived in Vegas and waited to get my bags from the collection area and then waited for my pickup.
We headed through Vegas and back to my friends place. I took in the sights as we drove close by the city. And driving on the other side of the road with this sensation is just so trippy. A feeling that brings the excitement levels up. We went through plans briefly and I had a shower. After more than 24 hours with no shower or bed, the sensation of showering and getting freshened up was heavenly.
I sent a few emails and messages to friends back home and quickly passed out on the bed and fell asleep. I awoke after 9 hours of sleep at around am. I felt like I could seriously go for another 10 hours of sleep before doing anything but I pushed through and got up. Coffee my old friend, where have you been the past 48 hours!? Finally got some Coffee into me and went through my plans again with my friend. We went through the details of my flight out of Vegas to Miami and I let him know when I had to be in town for my Helicopter tour of The Grand Canyon tomorrow.
My friend does photography for his own company and also assists his friends out with tours that they run. This is where knowing locals really helps out.
As it turns out while I was waking up my friend received a call asking if he could help out and do a tour of Hoover Damn tomorrow. It just so happens that this tour is starting not long after I return from my helicopter trip. A half day of plans just turned into a full day! My Vegas friends and I also know some people in a tribute band who will be playing a show tomorrow night. We were invited along. They also have a limo service that they run and asked my friend to drive the limo in to the show to help advertise it a bit.
I get to tag along to the show and sit in the back of the limo! Plans are unfolding left right and center. Having come from Australia where gun laws are way stricter, the concept of shooting a gun and it not being illegal is just so foreign to me.
There are now just four days left until I fly out to the United States for my big trip. The past few days have been full on and also the reason for my absence of posts over the past few days. University exams have come and gone and during that time I was also struck by an upper respiratory infection. Pretty unsettling to catch just days out of my flight to the U. Far and away the coolest are the singles from each of the band's solo albums, pressed in colored vinyl: red for Gene Simmons, purple for Paul Stanley, green for Criss and blue for Ace Frehley.
Each of these four also comes with a cut-out Halloween-type mask of each member's face in Kiss makeup, a throwback to the days when Kiss albums came loaded with swag. See announcement here.
The new dates are: Many thanks to Roberto Ariberti for the info. Kiss will play in Prague at the O2 Arena on June 14, ! Tickets are available here at the Ticketbande. As he tells it, Criss and Frehley were recalcitrant participants, at best. The band, during the reunion period, went south pretty quickly. It was something we managed to keep alive in much the same way a paramedic might keep a stroke victim from dying.
It was the same set list as Chile, Paraguay and Porto Alegre. In Porto Alegre, due to customs problems in Paraguay the show delayed in almost 2 hours because of missing equipments. Unbelievable that in we still can see mistakes like in More infos about the Vinyl Box in the news further below. The price is subject to change any time! The postage is very little. However, custom taxes import duties may apply when ordering from outside the EU. Like Spring Break for adults.
